Shared Safe Deposit Box After a Separation: Who Still Has Access?

When a relationship ends, one practical question tends to come up sooner or later: who still has access to the safe deposit box you rented together? At Trisor, the answer is always clear-cut, because the structure is defined from day one.

At Trisor, there's always one main renter

Unlike a joint bank account, Trisor doesn't offer joint contracts. Every safe deposit box has exactly one main renter (Hauptmieter), additional people can be added as authorized users, but they legally remain secondary users only.

That means the main renter can revoke any authorized user's access at any time, regardless of who that person is or what the relationship looks like. So if you're renting a box together with a partner, it's worth clarifying upfront who is registered as the main renter. And if you're just an authorized user, you should be aware of exactly what that means.

Revoking access: how fast it really is

As the main renter, you can revoke another person's access via the Trisor app or online within minutes. The change takes effect immediately and is logged in the digital access history, so it's always traceable who had access and when.

Protecting your own valuables: a second, private box

In some situations, someone may want to keep their own valuables safe, independent of a partner's access. For this, hopefully rare, case, a separate, private safe deposit box is the simplest solution. It can be rented discreetly at Trisor, without your partner's knowledge.

A brief note on marital property settlements

The contents of a safe deposit box can become relevant to a marital property settlement (Zugewinnausgleich) in a divorce. How individual items are treated depends on the specific case. This article does not replace legal advice, for guidance on your specific situation, we recommend consulting a family law attorney.
