Burglaries in Germany
Residential burglary remains one of the most common crimes in Germany – and offenders are rarely caught.
Since 2020, insurers have consistently reported around 90,000 residential burglaries per year – which still equates to about one case every six minutes. Although the total number of cases has increased again since the COVID low and now stabilizes at a higher level, the clearance rate, according to police statistics, is still below 15%. Burglary gangs operate with relatively little risk, often observing houses for days and striking specifically where they suspect cash, jewelry, or electronics.
For private households, burglary remains a realistic threat – and not only mechanical safeguards but especially storing valuables off-site can offer effective protection.

Increasing Damage from Burglaries
Alongside a consistently high number of cases, the average damage per burglary is rising: according to the GDV, it increased from around €2,900 (2020) to €3,800 (2024). Total insurance payouts rose to €350 million in 2024. The reason: thieves increasingly steal easily resellable valuables such as smartphones, cameras, laptops – and more often high-end watches or precious metals. Beyond financial loss, the emotional consequences can be severe: broken doors, shattered windows, and the feeling of no longer being safe in your own home.
Those who protect valuables outside their home reduce not only potential financial loss, but also preserve their peace of mind.

Don’t hide precious metals like gold at home
The internet is full of “life hacks” – YouTube videos and Instagram reels suggest everything from jars with granules to empty ice containers in the freezer or hiding places behind sockets or fuse boxes. But professional burglars know these tricks inside out. They check every suspicious spot – often in just minutes. Equally risky: hiding places are forgotten or unknown to family members or heirs.
Police therefore explicitly recommend storing gold, coins, and other valuables in an external safe deposit box – protecting them from theft and permanent loss.

Home safes are recommended but not a complete solution
A certified home safe can deter opportunistic theft – but it doesn’t eliminate every risk. If discovered, it can often be ripped from a wall or furniture and carried away given enough time. Worse still: burglars may intimidate residents and force them to open the safe under threat. In such cases, psychological trauma often outweighs the material loss.
Storing high-value items like gold, watches, or important documents in an external safe deposit box minimizes both theft and personal risk.

Good neighbors help keep you safe
An engaged neighborhood can significantly reduce the risk of burglary: people who know each other share vacation plans, notice unfamiliar vehicles or individuals, and report suspicious activity immediately. Joint measures – from well-lit entrances to “Burglary is pointless” stickers on mailboxes and windows – send a clear signal to potential intruders that vigilant eyes are watching and there is nothing worth stealing.
Talk openly to your neighbors about burglary prevention, share tips, and strengthen both your safety and the sense of community in your area.
